Treatment Options for Advanced Prostate Cancer
Although Biden's treatment plan has not yet been made public, there are established strategies for managing advanced prostate cancer that has spread to the bones.
One primary approach is hormone therapy, also known as androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). This treatment lowers the levels of male hormones — such as testosterone — which can fuel the growth of prostate cancer cells. ADT can significantly slow disease progression and help control symptoms, even in advanced stages.
Because the cancer has spread, surgical removal of the prostate is generally not considered effective. In these cases, the focus shifts to systemic therapies and regular monitoring.
Tracking prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels remains an essential part of managing the disease. Changes in PSA can help evaluate how well treatment is working and whether the cancer is advancing.
A National Wake-Up Call
Following Biden’s diagnosis, the American Cancer Society issued a statement underscoring the seriousness of the disease. “This news is a reminder about the tragic impact of prostate cancer in the U.S.,” the organization said. “Early detection is key, and we are concerned given the 5% year-over-year increase in diagnosis of men with more advanced disease. We can and must do more to prevent late-stage diagnosis and death from prostate cancer.”
As the world watches, Biden’s health journey is highlighting the importance of routine screenings, early detection, and ongoing advancements in cancer treatment.
