Qatar has firmly rejected recent remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in which he accused mediators of “playing both sides” in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. Describing the statement as inflammatory, Qatar condemned it as lacking in both political and moral responsibility.
In a post on X, Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote, “Qatar strongly rejects these provocative remarks... Such statements completely fail to meet even the most basic standards of political and ethical accountability.” A ceasefire was brokered in Gaza at the end of January this year, but following its expiration in March, Israel resumed its military operations in the region. Egypt and Qatar have played key roles as mediators in efforts to restore the truce.
In mid-April, it emerged that Israel had put forward a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza. Talks are currently underway, and the plan is expected to be implemented if Hamas agrees to its terms.
However, according to international media reports, Hamas remains steadfast in its core demands: a complete cessation of hostilities and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
The latest proposal from Israel includes a call for Hamas to disarm during the next phase of negotiations. Both Israel and the United States have made it clear that Hamas should have no role in the post-war reconstruction of Gaza.
