Islamabad, April 30 — Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Maryam Nawaz, Chief Minister of Punjab and daughter of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has called for national unity and unwavering support for the country’s armed forces, regardless of political differences.
Speaking to local media, Maryam emphasized that Pakistan’s status as a nuclear-armed nation serves as a key deterrent against external aggression. “While we may differ politically, in the face of any threat to our national sovereignty, the entire nation must stand by the military as a united front,” she stated.
She acknowledged the current strain along the Pakistan-India border and reassured the public, saying, “There is no need for panic. By the grace of Allah, our armed forces are fully capable of defending the country. Our adversaries are well aware of Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities.”
Maryam Nawaz further highlighted the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s martyrs, describing them as the foundation of the nation's strength. She credited her father, Nawaz Sharif, with playing a pivotal role in transforming Pakistan into a nuclear power.
The remarks come at a time of heightened alert following a recent militant attack in Pahalgam, located in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident has sharply intensified hostilities between the two neighbors, prompting fears of a potential military escalation.
Citing intelligence sources, Indian media have reported the possibility of a military strike against Pakistan within the next 36 hours. In response, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a stern warning during a phone call with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, asserting that any Indian aggression would be met with full force in defense of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Echoing this stance, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif warned that if India initiates a military offensive, Pakistan would consider the use of nuclear weapons as a last resort to safeguard its existence.
As tensions continue to rise, international observers are urging restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
