Pahalgam, April 22, 2025 — In a shocking act of violence, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in the picturesque town of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir late Monday evening, leaving several visitors injured and sending shockwaves through the region.
According to preliminary reports, at least 8 people were injured in the attack, which occurred near a popular market area close to the Lidder River. Witnesses say that two armed assailants arrived on a motorcycle and began indiscriminately firing at tourists before fleeing into nearby forested hills.
Security forces responded swiftly, cordoning off the area and launching a large-scale search operation to apprehend the attackers. Drones and sniffer dogs have been deployed, and checkpoints have been intensified across Anantnag district.
Victims in Stable Condition
Officials confirmed that among the injured were tourists from Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. All have been rushed to Anantnag District Hospital, and authorities say they are out of danger.
“Immediate medical attention was provided. The condition of all injured individuals is stable,” said a senior police officer on the ground.
Government Condemns Attack
The Jammu and Kashmir administration has strongly condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly attempt to disrupt peace and tourism in the valley.
“Such acts will not be tolerated. Those behind this attack will be hunted down and brought to justice,” said Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha in a statement, adding that additional security has been deployed in major tourist areas across South Kashmir.
Tourism Targeted Again
This attack comes at a time when Kashmir has seen a revival in tourism, with thousands of visitors flocking to the valley for the spring season. Pahalgam, known for its scenic beauty and as a starting point for the Amarnath Yatra, has long been considered a safe haven for tourists.
Security experts believe this attack may be a deliberate attempt to undermine growing normalcy and economic recovery in the region.
Investigations Underway
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have not yet attributed responsibility to any specific group, though officials suspect involvement of Pakistan-backed terror outfits active in South Kashmir.
National Investigation Agency (NIA) teams are expected to join the probe, while intelligence agencies are monitoring any cross-border chatter related to the attack.
As the valley reels from this senseless violence, calls for renewed security strategies and tighter vigilance in tourist hubs are growing louder.
